Chennai, June 6, 2025 – In a major step toward easing traffic congestion and enhancing urban mobility, the Chennai Metro Rail has initiated trial operations on the much-awaited Poonamallee to Porur stretch of the metro line under Phase II. This development marks significant progress in connecting the western suburbs to the city’s core.

According to the latest announcement by Chennai Metro authorities, a comprehensive trial run is currently underway from Poonamallee to Porur. The trial operations began today and will continue intensively for a full month. The purpose is to ensure safety, operational accuracy, and readiness of infrastructure before opening for public use.

Metro Rail Managing Director Nirvaka Iyyakunar Sithik stated that testing includes full system diagnostics and safety checks on the Up Line. Currently, the Down Line is under the final stage of track integration and system verification. Once both lines are cleared, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans to commence commercial operations, potentially easing peak hour traffic along the busy Mount-Poonamallee corridor.

Commuters and residents of areas like Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, and Porur can expect better travel times, reduced fuel costs, and less dependency on road transport once the line is operational. The new line also connects major hubs, hospitals, educational institutions, and IT corridors, boosting connectivity and urban development.

The CMRL has urged the public to stay tuned for updates regarding official inauguration dates and service schedules. Safety trials and signaling tests will be monitored in real-time to ensure passenger safety is not compromised.

This new stretch is part of the ambitious Chennai Metro Phase II project, aiming to expand the city’s metro network to over 118 kilometers. The project is expected to revolutionize public transportation and support sustainable urban growth.

Stay updated for further announcements from CMRL.
